Creative Uses for Used IBC Tanks
An IBC tank is one of the most versatile containers ever designed. Even after its industrial service life, a used IBC can be repurposed into dozens of practical and creative projects.

25 Ways to Repurpose an IBC Tank
Rainwater Harvesting
Connect to your gutter downspout for gravity-fed garden irrigation. A single IBC captures 275 gallons from just half an inch of rain on a 1,000 sq ft roof.
Aquaponics System
Cut the IBC into a fish tank (bottom) and grow bed (top). Add a pump for water circulation and grow organic produce from fish waste nutrients.
Raised Garden Bed
Cut the HDPE bottle in half horizontally. The bottom makes a deep-bed planter; the top (inverted) makes a shallow herb garden. Use the cage for support.
Composting Bin
Cut a large door in one side for adding material and turning compost. Drill ventilation holes in the sides. The large volume handles a full season of yard waste.
Emergency Water Storage
Clean a food-grade IBC and fill with treated potable water. 275 gallons provides a family of four with over two weeks of emergency water supply.
Livestock Waterer
Gravity-fed watering station for horses, cattle, goats, and sheep. The bottom valve connects directly to a trough or automatic float valve.
Liquid Fertilizer Storage
Mix and store large batches of liquid fertilizer or compost tea. The bottom valve makes dispensing into sprayers easy and mess-free.
Fish Pond
Cut the top off and use as a small fish pond or koi habitat. The depth is perfect for overwintering goldfish in mild climates.
Hydroponic Growing
Use the tank as a nutrient reservoir for deep water culture (DWC) or recirculating hydroponic systems. HDPE is naturally food-safe and light-proof.
Mobile Car Wash Station
Mount on a trailer with a pressure pump for a self-contained, portable car wash setup. Great for mobile detailing businesses.
Construction Site Water
Provide clean water for concrete mixing, dust suppression, or worker handwashing at job sites without water hookups.
Maple Syrup Collection
Collect sap from maple trees during tapping season. The large capacity reduces collection trips when running multiple tap lines.
Soap & Detergent Storage
Bulk storage for homemade or commercial soaps, detergents, and cleaning solutions. The valve makes dispensing into smaller containers simple.
Biogas Digester
Build a small-scale biogas digester from an IBC to generate methane from food waste and animal manure for cooking or heating.
Hot Tub / Plunge Pool
Remove the top, insulate the sides, and add simple heating — a steel-framed IBC makes a surprisingly sturdy DIY cold plunge or small hot tub.
Worm Farm (Vermicompost)
Stack cut IBCs vertically to create a multi-tier worm composting system. The bottom valve drains nutrient-rich worm tea for your garden.
Firewood Storage
Remove the HDPE bottle and use the steel cage as a ventilated firewood rack. The cage keeps logs organized and off the ground for proper drying.
Tool & Equipment Storage
Seal the valve, remove the top, and use as a weatherproof outdoor storage bin for garden tools, sports equipment, or construction supplies.
Dog Wash Station
Cut an access opening and install a ramp for a self-contained pet washing station. The sides contain splashing and the valve handles drainage.
Ice Bath / Cold Plunge
Fill with cold water and ice for athletic recovery. The insulating properties of HDPE keep water cold longer than metal alternatives.
Chicken Coop Water System
Gravity-fed watering system for poultry. One IBC provides months of water for a backyard flock with automatic nipple drinkers.
Beekeeping Water Source
Create a bee-friendly water station by adding floating rocks or corks to the surface. Bees need reliable water sources especially in hot weather.
Pressure Washer Water Supply
Fill an IBC and use it as the water supply for a pressure washer in locations without a hose connection. The gravity feed is sufficient for most pressure washers.
Art Installation Base
The cage's geometric steel framework has been used by artists as sculptural bases, lighting installations, and architectural elements.
Greenhouse Floor Thermal Mass
Fill black-painted IBCs with water and place inside a greenhouse. They absorb solar heat during the day and release it at night to regulate temperature.
